There are ways for people with bad or no credit to buy cars, though--used cars and sometimes new ones, too. My first car was purchased that way. If you have a steady income, you should be able to buy one. It might not be the car of your dreams, but you can find one that will do the job. Saving for a down payment can make the difference in interest rates and the car you get, too.
Just be sure you can afford the payments. If you meet the terms of your loan, that will help improve your credit rating.
Is there a way to work out a payment plan with one of your old creditors at a time, to pay off an old bill gradually, and then begin working on paying off the next one?
Also, I believe that after a certain number of years, negative old accounts on your credit report will drop off, which will improve your score over time.
You can get a one-time free credit report online or pay a monthly fee to have access to credit information, including recommendations on how to improve your credit rating. Also, you can get free credit advice from your local office of the Credit Counseling Center, a not-for-profit organization--not to be confused with other debt reduction companies working for a profit, often scamming their customers by not providing what they say they will do and getting people into deeper financial difficulties.
Don't give up hope. Learn as much as you can about improving your financial health (books and shows and information online can help). Make a plan and keep working toward a better financial future. You have two little ones that are counting on you to lead the way.
